ABOUT WINANCHOR

WinAnchor is a tiny, handy utility that anchors the top-most window to the upper-left-hand corner of the PC's screen. It's the ideal tool for users who like to consistently position windows that cannot be maximized.

This is useful for compulsive computer users (like me) who are constantly repositioning windows and dialogs near the upper-left-hand corner of the screen, either by cascading or moving them.

Why do we do this? Because for some users, when a Save As or other window opens positioned at a random location, it's simply too hard to read. Moving windows to a standard location makes the computing experience more consistent and easier on the eyes.

Some users like to center their windows and dialogs on the screen, but that's also inconsistent and, as a result, fatiguing. Menus and other GUI items will appear at different locations, depending on the size of the centered window.

Anchoring windows to the upper-left-hand corner isn't perfect, but it's the next best thing to maximizing, which always delivers a consistent visual experience (meaning menus and window elements are in the same places most of the time).

For users (like me) who prefer to the consistency of maximized windows, WinAnchor is the perfect tool for anchoring windows that can't otherwise be maximized.

INSTALLING WINANCHOR

Here's how to install WinAnchor and set it up for use.

  1. Download the WA1.ZIP file using the hyperlink at the top of this page. Save the download in a folder that you will remember and know how to find.
  2. Open the folder you saved the WA1.ZIP file in.
  3. Use your favorite unzipping utility to extract the ZIP file contents. Put the ZIP file contents into any folder on your hard drive.
  4. Create a shortcut to the WinAnchor.exe file (right-click the WinAnchor.exe file, then click Create Shortcut).
  5. Move the shortcut to your Desktop (right-click the shortcut, click Cut, then right-click your Desktop, and click Paste).
  6. Choose the hot-key you will use to invoke WinAnchor. To do this, right-click the shortcut, then click Properties. Click the Shortcut tab if it's not already open. In the Shortcut Key box, type the key combination you want to use to invoke WinAnchor.
  7. Click the OK button.
  8. WinAnchor is now installed and ready for use.

USING WINANCHOR

WinAnchor is a snap to use. Just press the hot-key you assigned whenever a window needs to be anchored. WinAnchor will instantly reposition the window. Note that WinAnchor unloads after every use, so it doesn't hog memory or steal CPU cycles.
