About
WinScribe is an audio transcription tool: load an audio file, play it back with fine control, and type a synchronized transcript alongside it. This is the web version of the original WinScribe desktop app, rebuilt with a cassette-deck-styled interface — no install, no account.
Documentation
Loading audio — click the reel window (or drag a file onto it) to load a tape. Only one file can be loaded at a time; use Eject to clear it and load another.
Playback — Play/Pause, Back, and Forward work like a normal deck. Back/Forward jump by the number of seconds set in "Back / Forward time." Loop repeats the last few seconds of what you just heard (starting from wherever playback was when you pressed Loop) — press it again to release. Speed adjusts playback rate from 0.5x to 2x.
Jump to — type a time as minutes (e.g. "2.5") or mm:ss (e.g. "2:30") and press Enter or Go to seek there directly.
Transcribing — type in the transcript panel as the audio plays. Ctrl+M drops the current timecode into your transcript at the cursor, handy for marking spots to review later.
Saving — "Save .txt" downloads your transcript as a plain text file to your device. Nothing autosaves to a server; save often. "Load .txt" reopens a transcript you saved earlier so you can continue it.
Eject — clears the loaded audio and reopens the deck for a new tape. If your transcript has unsaved changes, you'll get a quick warning, but eject always completes immediately.
Reset — puts Back/Forward time, Speed, Loop, and Expert Mode back to their defaults (3 seconds, 1.0x, off, off). Doesn't touch your loaded audio or transcript.
Expert Mode — changes how the app warns you about things like looping before there's enough played, or jumping past the end of the audio. Off (default): you get a short on-screen message explaining what happened. On: just a quiet beep, no message — for once you already know the app's quirks and don't want to be interrupted.
Themes — pick System, Light, Lark, or Dark from the dropdown in the top bar. System follows your device's light/dark setting automatically.
Verification — on your first visit, a quick "Quick verification" popup may appear to confirm you're not a bot. It closes itself as soon as you complete it, and never blocks you for long — it gives up and lets you in after a few seconds even if something goes wrong.

Privacy & Logging
Your audio file and transcript never leave your device — there is no server-side storage or upload of either. A small amount of anonymized usage data (page loads, verification results, that an audio file was loaded or a transcript was saved, resets, and errors) is logged solely for support and debugging. That log never includes audio content, transcript text, or filenames — only event type, a coarse timestamp, a random per-session ID, and the last two segments of your IP address for basic abuse/debugging signal.
